at indiana university one remains missing. lauren disappeared. with each passing day her family's holding out hope she will be found. john yang reports. >> reporter: indiana university's new school year begins with an old question -- what happened to lauren speier? the 20-year-old fashion student was last seen walking back to her offcampus apartment at about 4:30 in the morning, after a night hoof partying with friend june 3rd, three months ago today. this summer, her parents retraced the steps at the same time of night. rob speier says what they saw disturbed them. >> we saw people walking, many of them were inebriated, some walking by themselves. our message had not registered with people. >> reporter: as the school year begins, lauren's apartment complex held safety seminars. >> we were extremely, extremely disappointed by the lack of turnout. they're either invincible or they are just completely oblivious to their surroundings. >> reporter: weeks of searching, including last month's search of thousands of tons of trash at a landfill, haven't turned up any trace of lauren. rob and charlene

and indiana required you to show a photo i.d. to cast a ballot. republicans in five more states including wisconsin passed laws saying you can't vote unless you show i.d. you did not used to have to show and frankly not all people have. across the nation elected republicans are been hard at work making it harder to vote wherever they can, however they can. republicans in maine, for example, this year passed a law ending same day registration in the state. mainers can no longer register and vote on the same day as they have been able to since the early '70s. today, a maine group that's working to get same-day registration back pointed out that governor la page, himself and nine other elected maine republicans themselves registered to vote immediately before elections. the thing they just made illegal. saying it somehow made maine's elections unsafe. it's not fit for others and has to be outlawed but it's okay for them? in south carolina, nikki haley signed a law making it harder to vote in south carolina. 200,000 people in her state, 200,000 south carolinians do not have the photo i.d. tha

the model in indiana, leasing a state highway, and for both of you, do you think hired direct user fees are a more economically direct an efficient way of funding either extension or maintenance of roads and bridges? >> separating out roads from public transportation is an important first and getting more transparency and accuracy and honesty in budgeting. government accounting, that is helpful. i am an advocate of phasing out most if not all of the federal gasoline tax and allowing states to take those resources and spend them, because you have a hard time telling people who will spend it on roads if they see a guy doing state money, siphon off the subways and the bike paths and what not. they do not know what they can believe and what happened to the dollar they thought they were paying for roads. to the extent you can turn those cards face up and say this is what we're spending on road and public transit, subway system, and states you will never visit, and here is what you're doing and here's leisured -- not in your neighborhood. it is very helpful. >> direct user fees meaning tolls
